Iznajar village is built on the ruins of the 1,200-year-old Moorish castle which tops a rocky outcrop and parts of the fortified village walls can still be seen,  together, with the 16th Century Church, they stand as sentinels at the top.  This offers fantastic views of the surrounding area and the walk up to them through the old winding streets is lovely.  Here you will see the traditional white houses dotted on mountain sides, each with its own swimming pool.  You will see a vista of mountains and olive groves as far as the eye can see but the most stunning view of all is a most beautiful, unspoiled lake, gleaming blue in the sunshine, nestling in the valley below.  This you cannot beat!  You can meander through the streets of the pueblo or explore the newly restored castle, saying "hola" or "buenos dias" to the locals as you pass them by.

Iznajar Village

The village (pueblo) of Iznajar is a typical white-washed Spanish village with narrow winding streets.  The locals are extremely friendly and always delighted when you greet them with "HOLA".  Typical of Spaniards in general, they are amazingly friendly towards children - children are most welcome in all bars and restaurants until any hour of the evening.  This rural unspolit haven is where you will experience the "Real Spain".

Iznajar is centrally based to provide easy access to the delights of Cordoba, Granada, Malaga, Sevilla and Ronda, as well as the Sierra Nevada and the Costa del Sol. Discover and soak up the atmosphere of the historical centres of Andalucia. Iznajar is around a one hour drive from Malaga Airport therefore car hire is essential.

The Iglesia de Santiago church dates from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and is notable for its Baroque altar piece. Also of interest is the shrine of the Ermita de la Antigua, which was built in the seventeenth century and features a curious domed vault, which leads on to an even more unusual eighteenth century dressing room. It also has a small municipal museum, dedicated to its agricultural heritage and local customs.

The Barrio del Coso area is a lovely place to wander around, its maze of narrow lanes meander around attractive, whitewashed houses. From the main square, the Plaza Nueva, wonderful views of the surrounding countryside can be seen. It is also worth seeking out the small barrio of cave dwellings known as El Caganchuelo.
